***The Village Office will be closed Friday, August 25th***
A huge thank you to Summer Wardyn for volunteering 5 hours of time to the Unadilla Arboretum. She pulled weeds, trimmed trees, and other things to enhance the landscaping. We appreciate it so much!
The annual Groundhog Golf Tournament will be held this Friday, August 25, at the Syracuse Country Club. It's always a good time! Remember: orange is the official color of Groundhog Day!
Bob and I decided to do a little wandering last week. We stopped at Ashfall Fossil Beds first; it wasn't at all what we expected, it was so much more. And the things we learned! The first is that the ashes came from an eruption in Idaho. So many animals we didn't know about and I was amazed at the human looking footprints! The book they sell is an amazing source of information. (You can also find the story behind the elephant at Morrill Hall at UNL.)
Then we headed north to near Spencer, and saw what was left of the dam there that washed away. There are quite a few folks around here who grew up in that area.
Next was Ft. Randall Dam, which my father helped to build, and visited the town created for the workers, Pickstown, South Dakota. Tom Brokaw's dad also worked on that dam and also lived in Pickstown, going to school there also.
The last stop was the Dignity monument at Chamberlin, S.D. It is amazing and has been erected in a beautiful spot. There are shelters to get out of the sun, restrooms, and an information center. To give you some perspective on how tall the momunmnet is, Bob is 6'6", and it towers above him, somewhere around 50'. It was a lot packed into one day, but so enjoyable, and all we had to do the next day was drive home!
Another blast from the past! Thank you Shelby Wallen!!!
