2 - 3 p.m. All are welcome!
We love old cars and old tractors. Saturday we got to see both! And they were both green!!!
Car owner: Unknown
Tractor Owner: Bob Bryan
Have you seen the large flocks of geese flying north? They sure are loud. It's kind of early for them, isn't it? Monday, it was 83 degrees at the Western Wilhelm Outpost, today (Wednesday), it's supposed to be below freezing and a chance of 1 - 2" of snow! We love living in Nebraska!!!
The bird we had been watching near the west Nemaha bridge, we think was a bald eagle, although it was all one color. Did you know they don't get white feathers until they're around 4 years old? Learn something new every day?
Here's another group of birds...sort of!
Seen in a Walmart parking lot
Only a couple more weeks until Spring! And with that will come the beginning of baseball/softball season. Some teams are practicing now in the gym. It will also mean increased traffic down and around the ballpark. Please remember the intersection by the Park is now a 4-way stop. Be on the look out for our kids!
ARTESIAN SALT WELL AT UNADILLA
By Renowned Investigative Cub Reporter Bob Wilhelm
The other day during a staff meeting at the Paisley Bottom Coffee Shop and Critical Thinking Laboratory, our elder, John, reported on an article he had seen in the Lincoln Journal Star newspaper. It was one of those "This week in Nebraska History" briefs. This one was from 1889 and reported "An Artesdian vein of saltwater was found at Unadilla." The research committee promptly assigned me to see what further information I could find. With just a few minutes on the World Wide Web, my first wife suggested connecting to the Digital Archives of Otoe County, Nebraska. I have only been married once but I find that referring to Babs as my first wife keeps her on her toes. Anyway, we found a Syracuse Journal article from February 15, 1889, reporting on this Unadilla sensation. Area residents Ridgeway and Lamb bored a well on the Charles Dorman farm northwest of Unadilla and, coincidentally, within a mile of the Paisley Bottom Coffee Shop and Critical Thinking Laboratory. At the depth of 230 feet they struck a strong vein that rose to 15 to 20 feet above the ground. Unfortunately, the water was found to be very salty and unfit for human or stock consumption. A sample was sent to the University of Nebraska for analysis, which reported that a cubic foot of this water contained one and a half pounds of sodium matter. The water from this well was not as rich in salt as the salt well in west Lincoln. It was reported that it was not probable that salt could be profitably manufactured from this well. The well was eventually capped and remains that way to this day. I should clarify that our elder, John, did not witness this event...he had to work that day.
Remember: Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 10th.
