The rest of the story...
By Renowned Cub Reporter Bob Wilhelm
If you read the article last week about the Dick Cheney connection to Otoe County, and you really should have, then we have more information to share. Thanks to Russell Moss's information, you may recall that Dick Cheney's mother's (Marjorie Dickey) family lived in Burr. She had a brother named Vancel Dickey, who had died at the age of 15, and was buried in the Hopewell Cemetery. Again, we turned to our research department to find more information.

They were able to search the Otoe County Newspaper archives, and found a related article in the Syracuse Journal Democrat edition of June 21, 1929. In that article, it reported young Vancel had turned ill with what was ultimately determined to be an appendicitis attack. He was then transported to Lincoln General Hospital, where he underwent an emergency appendectomy. Although he survived the surgery, he died from complications a few days later. The paper reported that his funeral was held in Burr, at the home of James Chase. Research further revealed that James' wife was Marjorie Dickey's aunt. The article reported that Vancel "had a loving disposition and was a general favorite with his playmates and friends." Vancil was born in Sarbin, Nebraska, which was in Keith County, Nebraska. This concludes the reporting on the Dick Cheney Otoe County connections. Good day!

According to legend (and some local farmers), the wider the rusty brown/orange sections of a catepillar, the milder the coming winter; the more black, the more severe winter weather.
Leaves, leaves everywhere! What a beautiful fall we're having!
