We at the Western Wilhelm Outpost, woke up to about 8 inches of snow

Saturday morning. Then at 6 a.m., a call from the Groundhog Central

Committee, the celebration was on and we never looked back.

Although the crowd was down quite a bit from other years, those of us that

could make it to town, had a great time! (We had visitors from Lincoln,

Omaha, and Hadar, NE).

Charlotte Endorf portrays an agent for the Orphan Train

 

About 65 attended the presentation at the gym given by Charlotte

Endorf on the children that came to Nebraska on Orphan Trains.

It was very interesting and heartbreaking to learn of the children's

stories. Endorf picked 5 children from the crowd and explained how

they would be chosen and what type of life they might have led.

There were fewer vendors this year, but the silent auction was as

popular as ever. Kudos to Larry & Margo Larson for their great

display of items. Thanks to all those, both individuals and businesses,

that donated to this special fundraiser. Those items can be picked up

and paid for at the Village Office from 8:30 a. to 1:00 pm.

Winner of the commemorative rifle was Curtis Bohling.

Christie Brehm organized a small but beautiful quilt display this

year just off the lobby of the Community Center. The Library was

also open so visitors could browse.

Jeannie and Unadilla Bill

 

The parade started off with Jeannie Steinkuhler's Falcon providing

the wheels for Unadilla Bill. (Bob Brandt's Falcon, the official car of

Groundhog Day, was buried in a snowbank 2 miles north of town.)

In all, there were 18 entries in the parade, with just over 100 onlookers,

young and old. Master of Ceremonies, Bill Farmer, was assisted

by Lynn Schomerus.

 

Soup judges: Kelly Beck, Duane Hansen, Jill Sheeler

 

 

Jerky Judges: Shad Berner, Matt Capps, Gabe Meints

 

During the parade, the soup and jerky entries were judged. In the

Chili Soup category, Steve Cooper placed first, and John Cooper

was second. In the Vegetable category, there was only one

entry, the winner being Nina Jean Rohlfs. In the "Other" division,

Chuck Porter took first place with "Red Bean Coconut Chipotle" and

Jeannie Steinkuhler garnered second with "Gonna Beat Gary Soup".

In the jerky contest

Mel Giittenger took first with "Herky Jerky"; Rick Wassenberg & Chad

Pester placed second with "Teryaki"; and Jim Anderson came

in third with "Deer". Coordinating both judging teams was

Michele Hillman. For a free will donation, those present could

taste all the entries. Music at the Duncan Building was provided

by Nina Jean Rohlfs.

Jill & Mitchell will reign over the Groundhog Realm for the next

year. Margo Larson and Val Peterson were runners-up. Thanks

to all ten candidates for their groundhog loyalty, and their

good humor! The amount raised was unavailable at this writing.

The Unadilla Area Foundation would like to say a special thank

you to all the hard working volunteers not listed previously, and

personally, I would like to thank Jason Schomerus, and Dwight

and Sheena Kastens, for their "snow work". I'm sure there were

many others that will identified in the coming weeks.

call 911 as this will get help there before an incident reaches a

critical stage. Do not call a member of the Fire & Rescue, as they

have been instructed to call 911 to control the problem, whether

it's a fire or medical emergency."

NEWS FROM 100 YEARS AGO

 

Friday, 2-9-1912, The Otoe Union:

Eggs were 33 cents a dozen. Frank Sedam got a job with Cushman

Motor Co. The station agent at Tecumseh was "held up and robbed.

He gave up $25 and his watch." The Woodmen Fraternal Hall

was formally opened. (It was added as a second story to the W.F.

Hair General Store.) They had 80 members.
