Do you have any old Unadilla High School annuals that you would

like to contribute to the research section of the Unadilla Library?

We already have 1954 and 1958, but we would like a complete set!

We will also find a home for old photos, school records and

newsletters, deeds of sale, abstracts, or anything else that will

contribute to the history of Unadilla and the surrounding area.

Tuesday night, March 13, the Legion held its annual birthday party

and continuous member recognition. Bob Wilhelm, Curt Kimbell, and

Jerry Hespen served over 65 attendees. The Auxiliary provided

dessert and table decorations, as well as recognizing their own

members. These attending from Unadilla were: Ralph & June Tipken,

Ed & Virginnia Reed, Ron & Lois Johnson, Gordon Hopp, and

Bob & Barb Wilhelm.

Sunday afternoon, Bob & I traveled down I-29 south of Nebraska City.

We were amazed at all the debris still trapped in ditches and along the

road side; surprised by the number of wooden pallets and old tires.

It was very windy and there was a brown cloud above everything,

with visibility being a quarter mile and less. There are big drifts of sand

over the fences and in the fields, and we decided that was what was

blowing around in the air. We wondered where the sand came from.

We were also surprised at how far south the damage continued, and

how high the water marks were on the buildings that were still standing.

Just because the water has pretty much receded, there's still a lot of

recovery work to do. The graffitti on a block house on the outskirts of

Hamburg, Iowa, says it all, "We're All Mad Here."

Esther Ostrander, of Lincoln, died Monday, March 12 at Holmes Lake Manor. Esther was born 100 years ago, October 26, 1911, on the family farm near Unadilla. Daughter of Charles Edward and Edna Belle (Kent) Ostrander, she was one of eight children. Esther graduated from Unadilla High School and attended Peru State Teachers College. She taught in country school, Unadilla, Louisville and Kearney. During World War II Esther, a sister and a brother worked in the aircraft factories in Los Angeles. After the war Esther moved to Tacoma and accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service working in Washington and Utah. While in Washington she returned to school and graduated from Puget Sound University.
Upon retiring Esther moved to Nebraska to be closer to family. Esther enjoyed traveling and musical programs. She was an avid reader and followed current affairs and Nebraska sports. Esther was active in her church, Grace Community Evangelical Church. She showed her love for her large family by remembering all with greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and weddings.
Esther is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lloyd, Clark, and Charles; sisters, Elva Thomson, Nettie Witt and Lillie Larsen. She is survived by one sister, Jennie Pollock of Tacoma, Wash., a sister-in-law, Patty Ostrander of Palmyra, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 16 at Grace Community Evangelical Church at 6843 South Street, followed by interment at the Unadilla cemetery.

Friday, 3-22-1912, The Otoe Union:

A son was born to James Weavers'. L.D. Finigan, R.J. Vaughan, and

A. Botsford were nominated as candidates to the Village Board.

Henrietta Brandt and Harriet Wallen died, both being buried in

the Unadilla Cemetery.
